Frequently Asked Questions

What makes In Balance Living unique?

In Balance Living has a recovery emphasis that is structured around the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Terence Gorski’s Relapse Prevention Model. Furthermore, a strong therapeutic component complements the recovery aspect, creating a well-rounded treatment experience. We accept a maximum of 15 young men into the program so the community can remain safe, manageable, and individualized. Our program offers more freedom than other transitional programs allowing the residents to have a more realistic experience of what life will be like once they leave In Balance Living and venture out on their own. A fine balance of structure and accountability, along with freedom, provides residents with a secure and beneficial sober living environment.

How are behavioral issues and challenges addressed?

Each resident meets with a therapist once a week to address individual behavioral problems, as well as any other pertinent issues. In addition, they attend group therapy and outpatient treatment several times each week. Each resident's progress is monitored and assessed and if necessary additional support is offered and implemented. In Balance Living also provides referrals to psychiatrists if medication may be necessary in the treatment of these young men.

How is the family involved in treatment?

Family therapy is conducted at least once per month via telephone or in person. In addition, parents will be updated every two weeks by telephone or email on their son’s progress. If any additional support or therapy is needed, the staff is more than willing to provide the services or any necessary referrals.

How is recovery work incorporated into the program?

When residents arrive, they are expected to complete 21 sessions (approximately 3 months) of intensive outpatient treatment. In addition, they attend daily AA or NA meetings and find a sponsor during the first several months of the program. The residents are expected to maintain a relationship with their sponsor and actively work the 12-steps throughout their time in the program. When residents graduate intensive outpatient they have the option to attend aftercare.

How will educational needs be met?

In Balance Living is ready to assist the residents with college or high school enrollment. There are several educational options available including an on-site, distance-learning high school. The staff also provides job-search assistance, resume writing, and interviewing skills. If a vocational route is preferred, staff can also assist in the necessary arrangements.

Is there a doctor or psychiatrist on-site?

There is not a doctor or psychiatrist on-site. However, In Balance Living can provide referrals for doctors, psychiatrists, and any other medical need that may present itself. All referrals are for medical personnel that we have developed working relationships with and who can be trusted.

How accessible is the staff at In Balance Living?

Staff members are on-site 24 hours a day and are available to assist with any challenges that may arise throughout the resident's stay.

How do residents stay connected to their family and

friends outside the program?

Residents have 24-7 access to high-speed internet and long-distance and local phone calls. In addition, residents are allowed home visits and other out of town excursions to stay in touch with loved ones. Tucson provides an excellent climate year round making it easy and enjoyable for each resident to have visitors if they so choose.

On the flip side, we do recognize that there may be some individuals that residents should not be in contact with as it may jeopardize their recovery. In this case, we will monitor the resident's outside communication and implement restrictions if necessary.

What is the cost of the program and what does it cover?

The cost of the program is $5800 per month. This fee covers apartment rent, food, transportation to and from program-related activities, intensive outpatient, and individual, group, and family therapy sessions. Also included in the price is high-speed internet and access to a computer, satellite television, and long-distance and local telephone services. In addition, the cost covers a gym membership, select program activities, and a weekly allowance.

What is the minimum length of stay?

The minimum length of stay at In Balance Living is 6 months and is dependent upon each resident's progress. The average length of stay is 8-9 months. Research indicates that those facing the challenges of recovery from addiction grow stronger in their new, healthy lifestyle if given the opportunities that a program like In Balance Living offers. During the first three months, the program offers a moderately structured environment providing for a safe recovery. Gradually, residents gain more freedom as they work through the phases and are able to simulate what life will be like outside the confines of a program. We have found that the last phase of treatment is indicative of their abilities and likelihood of success outside of treatment. If a resident demonstrates competency, self-initiative and responsible decision-making, we feel confident that they are ready for independent living. If challenges present themselves during this final phase, we recommend additional time to ensure a smooth transition out of the program.

If I need even more structure than what In Balance Living offers, what are my options?

In Balance also offers a therapeutic boarding school that specializes in the treatment of adolescents with substance abuse issues.  In Balance Ranch Academy provides a safe environment for our students to continue their education, both high school and college level credits, while working towards their sobriety.  This program would be considered more appropriate if the student is currently using or has recently stopped.
